The Chief Executive Officer of Asante Kotoko, Nana Yaw Amponsah has said that his outfit could have won this season’s Ghana Premier League if they played their home matches at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
Throughout this season, the Porcupines played thier home matches away from home due to renovation works at the Baba Yara Stadium.[ads2]
Kotoko played all their home matches at the Accra Sports Stadium in the first round and had to switched to the Lenclay Sports Stadium for the second round of the league season.
And Nana Yaw Amponsah believes should they have played at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kotoko could have won the league with ten points gap and not their bitterest rivals Hearts of Oak who are now champions of the league.[ads3]
According to Nana Yaw Amponsah, playing home away from home affected the team’s performance throughout the season, but excited with the club’s position on the league log.
“If we had played at the Baba Yara Stadium, we would’ve won this league with 10 points gap because at some point, we were leading Hearts of Oak with 4 points but we thank God we didn’t disgrace ourselves, considering all the disadvantages,” Nana Yaw Amponsah told Happy Sports.[ads4]
“Some of the refereeing decisions that went against Kotoko this season, I believe if it was at the Baba Yara Stadium, the fear of God will be in some people. We all know that home advantage plays a key role in our football,” he added.
Despite losing the league title to Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko are in contention for the Ghana FA Cup and will have to eliminate Berekum Chelsea in the quarterfinals to keep their chances of winning the trophy alive.[ads5]
