Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia has been sworn in as the vice president of Ghana for the second term.
He was sworn in at an inaugural ceremony held at the Forecourt of the Parliament of Ghana on Thursday, January 7, 2021.[ads2]
Having teamed with President Akufo-Addo in governing the country from 2016, the renowned economist was chosen as the NPP Presidential running mate to Nana Akufo-Addo for the 2020 elections and they subsequently won.
President Akufo-Addo was able to accumulate 6,730,587 of the total votes cast which represent 51.3% as announced by the Electoral Commission.[ads3]
His closest rival and the flagbearer of the leading opposition party National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama had 6,213,182 of the total votes, making him the first runner up.
But since the declaration of President Akufo-Addo as the winner of the 2020 elections, the NDC have refused to concede defeat, stating that the election was flawed and fictitious.
According to the NDC, the Electoral Commission rigged the election to the advantage of the NPP and therefore won’t accept the results of the elections.[ads4]
After series of demonstrations and protests as a way of expressing their dissatisfaction with the results of the election, the NDC have filed a petition at the Supreme Court, challenging the results of the 2020 December polls.[ads5]
