President Akufo-Addo has been sworn in as president of Ghana for the second term.
The swearing in exercise was held at the Forecourt of the Parliament House on Thursday, January 7, 2021 with the Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah conducting the swearing-in, taking him through the required oaths.[ads2]
President Akufo-Addo continue governing the country for the next four years from January 7, 2021 to January 6, 2025, following the declaration by the Electoral Commission (EC) that he was the winner of the presidential election held on Monday, December 7, 2020.
The flagbearer for the ruling New Patriotic Party was declared the winner of the 2020 December polls by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Jean Mensa.[ads3]
Nana Akufo-Addo was able to accumulate 6,730,587 of the total votes cast which represent 51.3% as announced by the Electoral Commission.
His closest rival and the flagbearer of the leading opposition party National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama had 6,213,182 of the total votes, making him the first runner up.
But since the declaration of President Akufo-Addo as the winner of the 2020 elections, the NDC have refused to concede defeat, stating that the election was flawed and fictitious.
According to the NDC, the Electoral Commission rigged the election to the advantage of the NPP and therefore won’t accept the results of the elections.[ads4]
After series of demonstrations and protests as a way of expressing their dissatisfaction with the results of the election, the NDC have filed a petition at the Supreme Court, challenging the results of the 2020 December polls.[ads5]
