The results of 174 candidates in this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have been canceled with 1339 withheld due to examination malpractices, according to the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
According to WAEC, this has occurred due to various examination malpractices such as bringing foreign material including mobile phones into the examination hall, tearing off parts of question papers and collusion.[ads2]
This follows the approval of the 31st Meeting of the Ghana Examinations Committee held in October 2021 a statement released on Wednesday December 8 and signed by Agnes Teye Cudjoe, Head of Public Affairs said.
“The Entire Results of 3,667 candidates have been withheld pending the conclusion of investigations into various cases of examination malpractice detected during and after the conduct of the examination.
“The scripts of candidates from 194 schools in certain subjects have also been withheld and are being scrutinised. The withheld results of candidates may be cancelled or released based on the outcome of the investigations.[ads3]
“The Council wishes to express its sincerest gratitude to all stakeholders especially the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, the Security Agencies and Examiners, for their support and co-operation during the conduct of the examination and release of results.”
This year’s results saw English Language and Mathematics (Core) recording a decline in the performance of candidates at Grades A1 to C6 in 2021 as compared to 2020.[ads4]
Meanwhile, the Africa Education Watch in its recent report said about 55% of the WASSCE papers leaked between 10 and 1 hour before the start of the exam.
The council had conceded that extracts of questions for the elective Mathematics 2 paper and Section ‘A’ of English Language 2, were leaked on some social media platforms prior to the examination, but claims it was not extensive.[ads5]
