Thomas Asante, a Ghanaian forward who was born in England, was ecstatic and could not contain his happiness after scoring for the national team.
At the GTech Stadium on Wednesday, the Coventry City attacker scored in Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to rivals Nigeria in the 2025 Unity Cup opening. Cyriel Dessers of Rangers FC gave Nigeria the lead in just 14 minutes, and six minutes later, Razak Simpson’s own goal gave the Super Eagles the advantage.
Ebenezer Annan’s sumptuous cross to Thomas-Asante in the 70th minute was unable to keep the four-time African champions from losing.
“Overall, it was a little annoying; this is an important game for us,” the 26-year-old stated.
“It is a little annoying since we know we can defeat this team in this game. However, I am glad to start and score a goal for Ghana, something I have wanted to do for a while,” Thomas-Asante remarked following the match. ”
“Even when half of the supporters are against you, it is still awesome to play in front of them. It just goes to show what football and coaching are all about. We want to see more days like this one, and we had a great day”.
Nigeria will play Jamaica in the finals, while Ghana will play Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday, May 31 in the third-place play-off.
With 69 points, Thomas-Asante helped Coventry finish sixth on the log with four goals and three assists in 38 games under Frank Lampard.
