Ghana captain, Andre Ayew has downplayed claims that the AFCON 2021 was his last for the Black Stars after the team’s early exit from the tournament ongoing in Cameroon.
Ghana failed to progress from the group stage of the tournament after an embarrassing defeat to Comoros in Garoua last Tuesday.
The four-time AFCON champions were shockingly beaten 3:2 by Comoros who were making their debut AFCON appearance.[ads2]
Ayew who was an important figure in the Black Stars set up was shown a red card in the Comoros game after fouling goalkeeper Salim Boina.
Speaking to the press after the embarrassing defeat to Comoros, Andre Ayew insisted that he will definitely return to play in the next AFCON tournament.
“No, it is definitely not. This isn’t my last. I will be back,” Ayew said.[ads3]
The Al Sadd attacker went ahead to apologized to Ghanaians for the embarrassing defeat last night to Comoros.
“We didn’t make them proud and we take responsibilities for that because we didn’t have a good Afcon. We apologise to the nation for not going to the next stage. We’re very disappointed because this is not Ghana,” Ayew said.[ads4]
“If you check the goals we conceded against Morocco and verses Gabon, you can see that there was no luck. We need to learn from this
“If you guys know me, you will know I live to fight another day. We will be back because we’re going to work hard and will be back. We need to swallow the [bitter] pill now because teams won the Afcon and the next tournament they were out from the group stage and an example is Cote D’Ivoire after 2015.
“We need to stay calm and see what went wrong and like I said prepare because something is coming quickly which is the playoff for the World Cup and we have to be ready for that,” he added.[ads5]
