The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has thrown its full support behind Ghanaian international Antoine Semenyo following the racial abuse he suffered during Bournemouth’s English Premier League clash against Liverpool on the opening day of the season.
The incident, which occurred at Anfield, saw a 47-year-old Liverpool supporter hurl racist insults at Semenyo. The individual was swiftly arrested by Merseyside Police.
In an official statement, SWAG expressed “shock and dismay” over the incident but praised Semenyo’s resilience, highlighting his remarkable response on the pitch where he scored two goals despite the abuse.
“Like a true football warrior, Semenyo’s appropriate response was two spectacular goals amidst the incivility and vulgarity,” SWAG noted.
The Association also commended Liverpool Football Club for their quick condemnation of the act and their willingness to impose a lifetime ban on the fan if found guilty. Additionally, SWAG acknowledged FIFA, UEFA, and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for rallying behind the Black Stars forward, reinforcing the global fight against racism in football.
SWAG President Kwabena Yeboah underscored the importance of solidarity, praising both Liverpool and Bournemouth supporters, as well as fellow players, for their support in the aftermath of the incident.
The Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has also declared its solidarity with Semenyo, joining the chorus of voices calling for stronger action to eradicate racism from the game.
As the fight against racial abuse continues, SWAG urged Semenyo to remain resilient and assured him of the unwavering backing of football fans and institutions worldwide.
