Ace journalist, Cameron Duodo has urged President Akufo-Addo to prosecute illegal miners in order to overcome the fight against illegal mining popular known as galamsey.
Mr. Duodo believes should there be a prosecution, there would be fear and panic among the illegal miners which will prevent them from engaging in the activity hence winning the battle against the menace.[ads2]
He challenged President Akufo-Addo and those in charge of the fight to give their maximum best in order to overcome the fight against illegal mining.
“It is not rocket science my dear, it is just that we lack the political will, fortunately for us this is the President’s last term, and he can make things better for whoever succeeds him as the head of the party if he shows that he understands what crime and punishment means and I know being the lawyer that he is, he understands,” Duodo said on Asaase Radio in an interview.[ads3]
He added that, “If we enforce the law the way we are doing, not by sending 200 armed soldiers but a 1,000, maybe two battalions and if you give them time to do it directly, they will tell you how it will be done.”
Cameron Duodo believed, “The state has the apparatus to get the information, it is apparently locked up on somebody’s desk. Right now, maybe there are dockets that have not been completed, and we all know why, because there is money involved”[ads4]
“So, the minister of interior needs to be ordered to get hard on the heels of the police. If the police CID cannot do it alone, they can borrow people from EOCO and NIB and even military intelligence to help them get the information and pass it on.”[ads5]
