Otto Addo, the head coach of Ghana’s senior national team, claims that his team’s poor first half performance cost them the match against the Nigerian Super Eagles in the ongoing Unity Cup.
Ghana played better in the second half after falling behind 0–2 against Nigeria in the first, but it only got them a goal by Thomas Asante , which was merely consolation.
When justifying the loss, Addo attributed it on a bad start that gave the Nigerian team a two-goal lead. Nigeria won the match 2-1 to advance to the final.
“We were not actually involved. The aims, in my opinion, were too simple. The first goal was far too simple; in fact, it was a poor cross from Nigeria, but we scored too easily,” he remarked, adding that the second goal was rather fortunate.
We did not stop the cross and we are not a compact defense. Indeed, I believe we slipped in the middle as well, which is unacceptable. Nigeria, however, played with greater aggression in the first half.
Ghana will now play Trinidad and Tobago to decide their fate to avoid any embarrassment.
