Mitchell Agyeman, an English born player with a Ghanaian parentage made headline as he helped England Women team beat Sweden on penalties.
The South Ockendon native is of Ghanaian descent, attending Holy Cross School Primary and Southend High School for Girls.
The talented Agyeman was promising and dangerous when she was introduced in the second half when England met Sweden. She manages to add her name to the scoresheet by weaving wonderfully to make the scores 2:2 and send the game to Extra-Time and eventually penalties as England won 3:2 on penalties.
She was also among those who also made impact during the finals. After the match a lot of people wondered why such a gem did not play regularly.
One thing that she did right was achieving a feat with the England Women team which will be remembered forever and she will always be in the history books as the Ghanaian prodigy who helped England to lift back to back Euro titles.
Watching the Lionesses win 4-0 during a World Cup qualifier – and Sarina Wiegman’s first game at England’s helm – kicked off the then-15-year-0ld Michelle’s dreams of playing on the England squad as she stood on the Wembley sidelines. ‘Beth Mead got a hat-trick that day, so to be a part of that experience was invaluable and I’ll never forget it, she told BBC Sport.
On 6 April this year, Alessia Russo’s injury opened up an opportunity for Michelle to be selected for England’s senior squad for the first time, having been on Wiegman’s radar for years.
The 19-year-old ply his trade at Arsenal as she was captured by Gunners Academy in 2017 and she has been on fire since last season with injury free. She has been rewarded by the coach and she has paid it back with a smashing performance.
