Uruguayan superstar, Luis Suarez has said he will never visit Africa on his own after handball incident against Ghana in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
The Atletico Madrid attacker denied Ghana the chance to progress to the semifinal of the World Cup for the very first time after punching a goal-bound header with his hand in Ghana and Uruguay quarterfinal clash.[ads2]
Dominic Adiyah had a perfect go-bound header inside the penalty box but Suarez prevented the ball from entering the net by using his hand to punch it out.
Ghana was then awarded a penalty but Asamoah Gyan missed the opportunity to send Ghana to the semifinal. The Black Stars went on to lose to Uruguay in penalty shootouts.[ads3]
After a decade since the incident in South Africa, Luis Suarez has stated that he will never visit Africa due to the incident and even if he end up as a coach after active football, he will never work in Africa.
“I will never visit Africa on my own. Not anytime soon. After my hand save against Ghana. They were through to the semi-finals if I didn’t use my hands to save my country. Even if I become a coach, I will coach somewhere else, not there.” He said as quoted by Tales of Africa.[ads5]
