Ghana Premier League heavyweight, Asante Kotoko are close to appointing former Black Stars gaffer Mariano Barreto as their new head coach.
According to multiple reports in the media, Kotoko have settled on the Portuguese tactician as the perfect brain for the job despite the avalanche of coaches shortlisted.[ads2]
It is believed that Kotoko CEO, Nana Yaw Amponsah submitted a list of coaches to the Board but after a thorough deliberations, they have settled on Mariano Barreto who also coached the Ethiopian national team.
Coach Barreto has been unattached after leaving Lithuanian side Stumbers in 2018…[ads3]
He is expected to be in Ghana for the Asante Kotoko job with his own assistant coach and Physical trainer.
Coach Barreto has managed clubs like Marítimo, Al-Nassr FC, Naval 1º de Maio, AEL Limassol, Recreativo do Libolo and Al-Qadisiyah.[ads4]
He also served as assistant coach at Russian sides Dynamo Moscow and Kuban Krasnodar.
Meanwhile, Asante Kotoko have been without a substantive since Maxwell Konadu was sacked in December, 2020 with Johnson Smith and Abdulai Gazalle currently serving on interim basis.[ads5]
