The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League kicked off in dramatic fashion over the weekend, with plenty of talking points across the country.
Hearts of Oak endured a frustrating start to their campaign after being held to a goalless draw by newly promoted Hohoe United on Friday night at the Accra Sports Stadium. Despite dominating possession and enjoying a man advantage for the final 23 minutes, the Phobians failed to find a breakthrough against Hohoe’s resilient defence, led superbly by captain Osman Safian. The result has already sparked frustration among some Hearts fans, who questioned head coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani’s tactics.
Reigning champions Bibiani Gold Stars got off to a winning start, edging Bechem United 2–1 at Duns Park. Samuel Atta Kumi scored twice inside 22 minutes to put the champions in control before Darlvin Yeboah pulled one back for Bechem. Gold Stars held on to claim all three points, a boost ahead of their CAF Champions League qualifier against Algeria’s JS Kabylie on September 20.
Asante Kotoko ended a 15-year wait for an away win at Berekum Chelsea, with Albert Amoah’s second-half strike sealing a hard-fought 1–0 victory. The Porcupine Warriors will hope the win provides momentum heading into their CAF Confederation Cup clash with Nigeria’s Kwara United on September 21.
Elsewhere, Medeama SC climbed to the top of the table after a comfortable 2–0 win over Young Apostles, thanks to goals from Jacob Amu and Paul Yeboah. Karela United also opened strongly, beating Aduana Stars 1–0 in Tamale with Malik Abubakar’s early strike proving decisive.
Nations FC pulled off late drama, coming from behind to beat Swedru All Blacks 2–1, with Emmanuel Annor grabbing a stoppage-time winner. Heart of Lions also started brightly, defeating Dreams FC 1–0 in Kpando through an Ebenezer Abban penalty.
In other results, Vision FC held Samartex to a goalless draw despite playing the latter stages with 10 men, while Basake Holy Stars and Eleven Wonders also shared the spoils in a 0–0 contest.
With the first round of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League wrapped up, Medeama SC sit top of the table after their 2–0 win over Young Apostles. The Mauve and Yellow are joined on three points by reigning champions Bibiani Gold Stars, Nations FC, Asante Kotoko, Heart of Lions, and Karela United, all of whom secured opening-day victories.
Hearts of Oak, debutants Hohoe United, and several others are stuck on one point after draws, while Bechem United, Aduana Stars, Berekum Chelsea, Dreams FC, Swedru All Blacks, and Young Apostles occupy the lower half of the table after defeats.
It’s still early days, but the standings already hint at a competitive season ahead, with multiple sides staking their claim for early dominance.
