Former Ghanaian goalkeeper Sammy Adjei has expressed his dissatisfaction with the current generation of players, who he believes prioritize financial gain over the sport itself.
Many Ghanaian and African players view football as a primary avenue to lift their families out of poverty, making financial incentives a significant motivator. However, Adjei, a former goalkeeper for the Ghana Black Stars, argues that money should not be the primary focus.
Reflecting on his own career, Adjei noted that both Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak provided him with substantial financial rewards and gifts.
Despite this, he maintained that his primary focus was always on the game rather than the monetary benefits. Speaking on Angel FM, he emphasized the importance of valuing the sport itself over financial considerations.
“Kotoko fans gave me more money and gifts. Hearts of Oak fans did the same, though not as much as Kotoko. I am not trying to disrespect them. The current players, however, are more focused on money than on football.
During our time, we chose to play for Hearts and for the fans. A victory was their biggest bonus when they came to the stadium. Some of us even trained on the beach for days to keep ourselves in shape.”
He also said a couple of days ago that if he trains well and gets the opportunity, he can be in the post for the Black Stars at the FIFA World Cup
