The 28-year old who is considered as one of the best strikers in the continent currently was part of a twenty-three man squad Ghana will present against Mali in an international friendly to be staged in Turkey next month.
Speaking while announcing the players, CK Akonnor stated that himself and Ordartey Lamptey unearthed John Antwi during his days at Sekondi Eleven Wise and has been monitoring the progress of the prolific goal poacher.

He added that Antwi has been consistent since landing in Egypt thus his inclusion into the squad.
“Ordartey [Lamptey] and I unearthed him [John Antwi] at Eleven Wise and since then, he has done well for himself”, he said..
“The last time we had the call-ups, he was not part of the team because I was personally not too convinced that he should be part of the team at that time, I am looking at consistency with the team and I think he has proven beyond doubt he is good, scored over 100 goals, now I think 102. He deserves a chance because he has done well”, he added.

Akonnor continued that, ” Egyptian league is not an easy league that you can just score. He has done well and deserves a chance. All these new guys have the chance, we want people who can help us improve and also win the AFCON.”
Meanwhile this is the second time John Antwi is getting a call-up after his last one which was a world cup qualifier against Uganda in 2017.
