Asante Kotoko managed to defeat regional rivals AshantiGold Sporting Club in the Ashanti Derby on sunny Sunday afternoon.
It was the 62nd time the two teams were meeting and was also week 28 of the ongoing Ghana Premier League with tension surrounding the game.
The euphoria in Obuasi was very high as the two teams needed the three maximum points badly and the bragging rights over the other.
Kotoko wanted to leapfrog bitterest rivals Hearts of Oak to the top of the league table whilst AshantiGold SC needed the points to keep top four dream alive.
The two clubs gave the best of performance, with much eagerness to tame the other for the points but Brazilian international Fabio Dos Santos Gama made the difference.
Gama scored the only goal in the frantic encounter for Asante Kotoko who were playing as the host to AshantiGold SC at the Lenclay Sports Stadium.
The Brazilian midfielder headed home a perfect cross from defender Patrick Asmah in the 23rd minute to give Kotoko the full points against regional rivals AshantiGold SC.
The victory means Asante Kotoko move to the summit of the league table, with just a point separating them and rivals Hearts of Oak who have a game against city rivals Great Olympics this evening…[ads5]
