Former Asante Kotoko winger, John Smith Bannerman has called for Asamoah Gyan to be part of the Black Stars technical team for the upcoming African Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
According to the former Ghana winger, the inclusion of Asamoah Gyan in the technical team of the Black Stars will help the team in winning the AFCON trophy.[ads2]
The AFCON trophy has eluded Ghana for the past 39 years despite several attempts – with the West African country determined to lift the trophy at the upcoming prestigious tournament in Cameroon next year.
Speaking to Takoradi-based Ahoto FM, Mr. Smith Bannerman who was part of the 1982 team that won Ghana the last AFCON trophy believes the presence of Asamoah Gyan in the technical department of the Black Stars will motivate the younger ones in the team and can ginger the players in winning the trophy.[ads3]
“I think Gyan shouldn’t be call as a player [ for the Black Stars] because he has paid his dues and past his prime now. He can only be part of the technical team”, Smith Bannerman told Ahoto FM in an interview.
“He can’t play but can give advise to the younger ones in the team, his motivation can go a long way in winning the trophy but if added to the squad as a player, he will weaken the team”, he added..
Meanwhile, Ghana has been drawn in group of the AFCON 22 in Cameroon alongside Morocco, Gabon and Comoros.[ads5]
