The University for Development Studies (UDS) are the new kings of university football after edging Paulista University of Brazil 2–1 in extra time to win the 2025 World University Games football tournament.
The final, witnessed by nearly 23,000 fans, began in dramatic fashion. Paulista struck within the opening 30 seconds when Gabriel Viera punished a defensive lapse and expertly lobbed goalkeeper Emmanuel Edo for a shock early lead.
Despite the early setback, Ibrahim Tanko’s men quickly settled into their rhythm, dominating possession and creating chances. But their profligacy in front of goal kept the defending champions ahead.
UDS refused to relent, however, and their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time. A mazy run by Frimpong forced a save from Silva, only for captain Asigre Sulemana to pounce on the rebound and slot home in the 93rd minute to level the tie.
With momentum on their side, the Ghanaians pushed hard in extra time. Paulista’s goalkeeper Silva stood tall with a series of fine saves, but in the 121st minute he faltered. Ezedeen Alhassan’s corner delivery slipped through his grasp and into the net, sending the UDS bench and travelling supporters into wild celebration.
The referee’s final whistle came moments later, confirming UDS as champions and dethroning Paulista, who had lifted the trophy two years earlier.
The triumph marks a historic achievement for UDS, who showed grit, belief, and late drama to seal their place at the summit of university football.
