Former Ghana international, Awudu Issaka has entreated Black Stars coach Chris Hughton to recall Felix Afena-Gyan to the senior national team.[ads2]
The Cremonese attacker was part of the Black Stars squad that qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar by eliminating Nigeria in the final playoff round.
Despite not scoring in the two legged tie, Afena-Gyan played an instrumental role as the striker of the Black Stars under coach Otto Addo.
He was subsequently excluded from the final squad for the mundial in Qatar after leaving AS Roma to a struggling Cremonese side in the Italian Serie A.[ads3]
With the arrival of Inaki Williams, Antoine Semenyo and other forwards, Afena-Gyan has since not been part of the Black Stars and was recently not included in Chris Hughton squad for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Angola.
And with goal scoring becoming a problem for the Black Stars attackers, Awudu Issaka believes Afena-Gyan should be given the chance since he has some qualities that other strikers in the Ghana senior male national team lack.
“Afena-Gyan should be recalled to the Black Stars because he possesses some qualities that the current strikers lack,” he told Angel TV.[ads4]
Meanwhile, after missing out of the Black Stars, Afena-Gyan was handed the opportunity to play for the Ghana U-23 in the AFCON qualifiers against Algeria but turned down the call-up.
The 20-year old who has missed the last two games for Cremonese, has rather chosen to train harder with his fitness coach to be in good shape for subsequent competitions.[ads5]
