The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of a suspected gang leader and an accomplice in connection with the armed robbery attack on the Berekum Chelsea team bus that claimed the life of forward Dominic Frimpong.
The incident occurred last Sunday along the Bibiani–Goaso road as the Ghana Premier League side returned from a league fixture against FC Samartex at DUN’s Park.
According to police reports, armed men blocked the road, forcing the driver to attempt a reversal before the attackers opened fire. Players and officials fled into nearby bushes as gunshots rang out.
During the chaos, 20-year-old Frimpong, who was on loan from Aduana FC, sustained a gunshot wound and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Six other players suffered minor injuries.
A swift police manhunt led to the arrest of two suspects, including the alleged gang leader. Authorities revealed that one of the suspects sustained injuries during an exchange of fire with police intelligence teams and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The Ghana Police Service says investigations are ongoing, with further updates expected as efforts continue to bring all perpetrators to justice.
Frimpong, who had scored two goals in 13 league appearances this season, has been widely mourned across the football community. Tributes have poured in from FIFA, the Confederation of African Football, and several clubs, all describing his death as a significant loss to the sport.
The tragic incident has also renewed concerns over the safety of teams travelling for domestic competitions in Ghana.
