Rugby Africa President, Herbert Mensah, has been confirmed to serve a full four-year term as Chairman of the global regions of World Rugby, marking a significant shift from the previous rotational leadership model.
Until now, the chairmanship of the four regional bodies—Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas—rotated annually. However, a key decision taken during Thursday’s World Rugby Council.
“As the chairman of the regions, the position used to rotate every year. But members of the regions agreed that Mr Mensah should remain in the role for a full term. This proposal was presented to Council and passed by vote.”
Reacting to the decision, Mensah expressed his appreciation and vision for inclusive leadership in a statement shared.
“Incredible week. The highlight was witnessing authentic leadership in action class with humility. Many good people became better.
“Our future depends on brave men and women standing tall today. We don’t always have to agree, but we must learn to work together.
“Let’s recognise and value the strengths of others. Together, we can make meaningful change.
“I am exhausted but energised. There’s something truly beautiful about good behaviour and manners. If your mother didn’t teach it—learn it.”
The World Rugby Council’s agenda included major items such as the development of a new strategic plan, preparations for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, the successful momentum of the 2025 edition, innovations in game laws, and advancing player welfare. Also discussed was the continued growth strategy for rugby in the United States.
Mensah’s appointment is seen as a strong vote of confidence in Africa’s growing influence in the sport’s global governance.
