Ghana has taken a significant stride in promoting inclusivity in sports with the official launch of its first-ever Para Swimming Association. The historic inauguration ceremony was held at the headquarters of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) in Accra, where members of the newly formed board were unveiled.
Operating under the umbrella of NPC-Ghana, the association seeks to provide opportunities for swimmers with disabilities and pave the way for their participation in both local and international competitions. It also aims to ensure that para athletes receive the recognition and support needed to thrive.
Ayishatu Farida Iddriss has been appointed as the inaugural President of the Ghana Para Swimming Association, making her the first to hold the position. She will lead an experienced team dedicated to advancing the para sports agenda across the country.
The board includes prominent individuals from various sectors, including JoySports’ Haruna Mubarak, who has been named Deputy Director of Communication and Public Relations.

The association is expected to collaborate with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, international federations, and key stakeholders to identify, develop, and support para swimming talent nationwide. It will also work towards Ghana’s long-term goal of qualifying swimmers for the Paralympic Games.
This initiative represents a major milestone in Ghana’s commitment to inclusivity in sport and is a timely development for athletes with disabilities, who now have a structured pathway to realise their sporting dreams.
