Former Asante Kotoko winger John Smith Bannerman says Ghana has the quality to lift the 2021 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The AFCON trophy has eluded Ghana for the past 39 years despite several attempt in recent years.
Though many Ghanaians have lost confidence in the current squad considering the team other countries are building, Mr. Bannerman believes Ghana can lift the giant trophy with the current players available.[ads3]
Speaking on Takoradi-based Ahoto FM, Smith Bannerman who was part of the Ghana squad that won the 1982 AFCON trophy believes Ghana boast of enough talents that can compete with other African countries for the giant trophy but the job lies on the head coach to do a due diligence in selecting players for the tournament.
“Ghana has the quality but it all depends on the head coach [CK Akonnor]”, Smith Bannerman told Ahoto FM in an interview.[ads4]
“The coach should do the right selection because Ghana has numerous of players playing abroad but it will be difficult for the country to win the trophy [AFCON] if he fails to invite the right players for the tournament”, he added.
John Smith Bannerman played for Asante Kotoko from 1982 to 1983 before joining Sekondi Eleven Wise from 1984 to 1985 then retuned to Kotoko to play three more years for the Ghana Premier league giants and was part of the Black Stars squad that won the 1982 African Cup of Nations in Libya.[ads5]
