A devastating fire has engulfed the Techiman Central Market in the Bono East Region, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Eyewitnesses report that the inferno has destroyed numerous shops, causing substantial losses to goods and property.
Emergency services, led by personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), are currently on-site working tirelessly to contain the blaze and prevent its spread to surrounding areas. Divisional Officer I (DOI) Alex King Nartey of the GNFS Public Relations Department has confirmed the incident.
This disaster adds to a string of recent market fires across Ghana. Just days ago, on January 2, 2025, Accra’s Kantamanto Market, famed as one of the world’s largest hubs for secondhand clothing, was gutted by a massive fire. That incident resulted in the destruction of hundreds of stalls, leaving thousands of traders in distress and incurring significant economic losses.
The recurrence of these fires raises concerns about the safety measures in Ghana’s markets, prompting calls for immediate action to safeguard the livelihoods of traders.
