Former Ghana defender, Yaw Amankwah Mireku has appealed to Ghanaians to desist from blaming CK Akonnor whenever Black Stars perform poorly.
Black Stars coach, CK Akonnor has been chastised severely after the team’s defeat to South Africa in the 2022 world cup qualifiers, calling for his sacking as soon as possible.[ads2]
Many of these Ghanaians calling for the sack of CK Akonnor are of the view that if the former Asante Kotoko coach is still at the helm of affairs for the Black Stars, Ghana might for the second time in a row not qualify for the world cup.
But according to Yaw Amankwah Mireku, Black Stars is not performing because there is no consistency in the current squad and Ghanaians must lower their expectations.[ads3]
He believes the call for the sacking of CK Akonnor is non-essential because Ghana has a country lack quality players to challenge other countries in a game.
“Ghana lack quality players and at the same time consistency. If CK Akonnor is able to keep this current squad for a longer period, they will perform extraordinary, but it will also be disastrous for us if we call the players today and eject them tomorrow for a different squad”, Mireku told Takoradi-based Ahoto FM.[ads4]
He continued that, “footballers make coaches so if players are not performing, it affect the coach so Akonnor shouldn’t be blamed for the team’s abysmal performance.”
Ghana’s chances of making it from the group stage of the qualifiers is now on a thin thread after the 1:0 defeat to South Africa at the First National Bank Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday, September 6, 2021.
Ghana is currently sitting second on the 2022 world cup qualifiers table with three points after two matches with South Africa at the summit with four points.[ads5]
