Ghana coach CK Akonnor has explained reason why the country lost to South Africa in 2022 World Cup qualifier on Monday, September 6, 2021.
Ghana was sublimed to a 1:0 defeat by the South Africans at the First National Bank Stadium in Johannesburg in the second game of the qualifiers.[ads2]
The West Africa country needed at least a draw to boost confidence of qualifying from the group stage of the qualifiers to the knockout stage but didn’t end well as expected.
Ghana’s hope of returning from Johannesburg to Accra with a positive result was shattered by Bongokuhle Hlongwane late minute goal that gave South Africa the full points.[ads3]
Speaking to the media after the cagey encounter, coach CK Akonnor admitted that Ghana’s attack wasn’t clinical especially in the second half, other than that the team could have won the game with ease.
“Well, we started very well in the first half, tactically we were very disciplined. It went the way we want it. [But] we were not clinical upfront, that’s the problem. But I was satisfied with the way we played in terms of controlling the game.”[ads4]
“In the second half, we somehow lost the midfield in terms of how we want to play because we believed that we could win the game. We did one or two substitutions, which really went the other way round and we kept dropping and dropping”, Akonnor explained.
The victory therefore means South Africa lead the group with four points after two matches while Ghana has only three placing second.[ads5]
