I am not impressed – Sports Minister on Black Stars’ performance

Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Kofi Iddie Adams, has expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the Black Stars, despite the team’s strong position in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, the Minister pointed to Ghana’s failure to qualify for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco as a major setback, stressing that there remains “a lot of room for improvement.”

“Very soon AFCON will start in Morocco. Is Ghana going to be there? No,” he said. “We have not qualified for the World Cup yet… so if I tell you that I am impressed then it means I don’t know my job. I am not. There is a lot of room for improvement.”

Adams noted that head coach Otto Addo has accepted responsibility for the team’s performances, even as Ghana sits at the top of Group I in the qualifiers. The Black Stars have collected 19 points from eight matches, recording six wins, one draw and one defeat.

Their most recent victory, a 1-0 win over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium, has left the team on course to secure qualification to the global showpiece.

However, the Minister insists that World Cup progress does not erase the disappointment of missing out on AFCON 2025, while urging the team to sharpen its performances on the international stage.
