AFCON 2021: Huge disappointment as Ghana share spoils with Gabon

Ghana has landed herself in a tough situation after a one-all stalemate with Gabon in second group game of the AFCON 2021 on Friday evening.

It was a disappointing result for the Black Stars who needed the three points badly to keep chances of securing a ticket to the knockout stage alive.

Prior into the game, Ghana had lost her first game to Morocco and needed to spank Gabon at all cost before the final game against Comoros.[ads2]

Skipper Andre Ayew broke the virginity of the game with a perfect and well-calculated strike to give Ghana the lead in the 19th minute of the all-important clash.

It was a perfect pass from Arsenal FC midfielder Thomas Partey who set up Andre Ayew the finest opportunity to give Ghana the lead.

After scoring the opener, the Gabon players started unleashing hard tackles on the Black Stars players to frustrate them for the equaliser.[ads3]

The likes of Daniel Amartey, Alexander Djiku, Thomas Partey, Baba Iddrisu, Andre Ayew, Andy Yiadom, Jordan Ayew becoming victims of the harsh tackles.

In the 28th minute, Gabon midfielder Obiang nearly had the equaliser but his strike was headed to corner by defender Daniel Amartey.

Andre Ayew could have gotten the double for Ghana in the 37th minute but his header from Kamaldeen Sulemana cross went miles away from the goal post.

With three minutes to the end of the first half, goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott made a brilliant save to prevent Gabon from having the equaliser.

The first half ended with Ghana leading the scores.

The second half begun with the Gabon players pushing for the equaliser. Ghana defender Alexander Djiku made a beautiful clearance to prevent the Black Stars from conceding.

In the 59th minute, Ghana goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott made another spectacular save to keep the four-time AFCON champions on the lead.

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac started throwing more men into the game by substituting Kamaldeen Sulemana for FC Sheriff midfielder Edmund Addo in the 60th minute of the game.

Gabon defender Kanga nearly had the equaliser but his long range strike in the 63rd minute went off target.[ads4]

Baba Iddrisu had an injury in the 64th minute and was replaced by Joseph Paintsil.

Goalkeeper Jojo Wollacott was shown the yellow card by Algerian referee Lahlou Benbraham for time wasting.

As if Ghana is winning the game, out of nowhere, Jim Allevinah with a half chance managed to strike home the equaliser in the 88th minute to give Gabon a crucial point to keep chances of qualifying alive.

The draw means Ghana has only a point after two matches and will have to tame Comoros in the last game to be able to qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament…[ads5]
