Kotoko Coach, Abdul Karim Zito

Abdul Karim Zito has step down from his position as head coach of Kumasi Asante Kotoko with immediate effect, the club has confirmed.

The club announced on Monday, through its official social media channels, that Zito had resigned from his position, with management accepting his resignation. The club expressed gratitude for his service and indicated that further details regarding its new technical direction would be shared in due course.

Zito’s departure concludes weeks of speculation about his future following Kotoko’s elimination from the MTN FA Cup at the Round of 16 stage the previous weekend. The Porcupine Warriors were eliminated on penalties by Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, a result that increased pressure on the technical team.

Earlier on Monday, club officials had stated that no final decision had been made regarding Zito’s position, although they acknowledged dissatisfaction with the team’s performances this season. By resigning, Zito effectively pre-empted a potential dismissal. His contract reportedly stipulated either a one-month notice period or a compensation payment of GH¢120,000 in the event of termination.

However, the current campaign has been challenging, with Kotoko exiting the Confederation Cup in the second qualifying round and struggling for consistency in the league, where they are currently eight points behind the leaders.

Zito was appointed head coach in July 2025 following a successful interim period, during which he led Kotoko to an FA Cup victory and qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.

He is now been replaced by Prince Yaw Owusu as an interim coach, the later will handle the match between bitter rivals Hearts of Oak.
