It was a chaotic scene as top officials from the leading opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC) clashed with the security at the Tema Port.
A delegation from the NDC comprising of the party’s Communications Director Sammy Gyamfi, former Minister of Trade and Industry Ekwow Spio-Garbrah and Bolgatanga Central Member of Parliament Isaac Adongo visited the port to find out the difficulties with the newly introduced Integrated Custom Management System (ICUM), also known as UNIPASS.
There has been controversies surrounding the UNIPASS since it introduction. The new port-clearing system processes documents and payments through one window and instead of the previous system where valuation and classification and risk management and payment were handled by different entities.
Even Freight forwarders have complained severally about some difficulties with the new system, claiming at times they are unable to clear their goods in time.
Due to the numerous complains, the NDC officials decided to visit the Tema Port ascertain the challenges that the new-clearing system comes with.
As and when they were addressing the media on their mission to the place, security men stormed the place and asked them to leave, causing a chaotic scene.
