“We need to get the basics right” – GFA President’s reply to H. E. Nana Addo

President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt E.S Okraku has revealed his passionate reply to President Nana Addo Dankwa on whether Ghana stands any chance of winning a major trophy anytime soon.

Ghana last won an official trophy in 2009 when the Black Satellites beat Brazil on penalties to win the FIFA Under–20 World Cup in Egypt.

The Black Stars have waited 38 years and more since winning their 4th AFCON title in 1982 – the Black Queens despite triumphing in All African Games in 2015 are still expecting their first AWCON title, failing to win in 2018 when the nation hosted.

On the club level Hearts of Oak’s 2000 CAF Champions League title and 2005 CAF Confederation Cup remain the only titles for the country in club football.

According to the President Kurt Okraku who assumed office some 6 months back, Ghana has to get the basics right and that will in itself start winning the nation laurels.

In a conversation of Daniel Oduro of GhanaWeb, the president revealed this and more.

“Before I answer when we are going to get to winning trophies let me tell you a question the president asked me; the president of Ghana me asked a question, he was like; Mr. President[Kurt Okraku] when will we start bringing the big trophies to Ghana, for me that was the voice representing the voiceless in this country, we’ve not won any trophy at the club level since Hearts of Oak in 2005, our U-17, the I’ve been yearning for the AFCON trophy since 1982.

“The women have not made it, wow we have Futsal and Beach Soccer, clearly it tells you that the country is yearning for celebrations, for trophies. I said to him that the journey has just begun and we need to get the basics right and if we get the basics right, I have no doubt that we will get to the target of winning” – Kurt Okraku’s response to His Excellency Nana Addo.
